Big news from the Sydney Royal Easter Show, as reported in today's Sydney Morning Herald...

A world away at the dog pavilion, 16,000 paws have pranced past the judges over the past 11 days, but all the primping and preparations came down to one final decision yesterday: and the winner was a dandie dinmont terrier.

It was a case of the "best of the best" as the 150 finalists were narrowed down to seven - a pug, whippet, rottweiler, Australian shepherd, labrador retriever, shitzu and the terrier - all vying for the title of Purina Sydney Royal Dog Show's Best In Show.

Ringmaster Peter Higgins said getting down to the final seven was a difficult decision for the judges. "Once you start to include all the other breeds, then you've gotta say, 'well that's a really good whippet and that's a really good dandie dinmont, but how do you [differentiate] between the two?'. That's where it becomes really hard."

But the judge of the final, Ove Germundsen, said the dandie dinmont terrier was one of the best of the breed he'd seen. "When she went into the ring she just said, 'I own this', and she did."

Emma Greenway who owns and bred Cilla the dandie dinmont terrier, said the win was "indescribable". Cilla's grandfather was the top showdog in America in 2005.

"You dream of winning something like this but you never actually think [you will]," she said.
