'Vulnerable breed' dog wins Best in Show
Wednesday, 22 July 2009 16:21

Congratulations to Sheila, Paul and Jackson (Yazga Love The One You're With) on winning BIS in the Best Of British Companion Dog Show on Saturday.

A DORMANSLAND dog whose breed is classified as vulnerable by the Kennel Club has triumphed in the organisation’s Best of British Companion Dog Show.

Jackson, a Dandie Dinmont Terrier owned by Sheila Bullock and Paul Keevil, took home the coveted Best in Show prize.

Dandie Dinmonts are on the Kennel Club’s British Vulnerable Breeds list because only 119 puppy registrations were made with it last year, whereas estimates suggest a breed needs at least 300 registrations in order to ensure future survival.

The event was organised to mark the 150th anniversary of dog shows.

The Kennel Club’s Caroline Kisko said: “We are delighted that Jackson won our celebration of 150 years of dog showing, which will help to raise the profile of the lovely Dandie Dinmont breed.

“The day really gave people the chance to find our more about how dog shows can help improve the future of our pedigree dogs.”

Mr Keevil added: “I was delighted when Jackson came home with the prize for the best dog on the day.

“I have no doubt that the judge saw what a happy, healthy dog he is and how much he loves life, and that is why he came back with the prize.

“It’s a double celebration for us to win the show, because Dandie Dinmonts are a vulnerable breed and this will really help potential dog owners to find out about this wonderful breed and whether they might be right for them.”

All money raised from the show is going to the Kennel Club Charitable Trust.

george-johnstonSadly I have to report the death of George I Johnston (Sykemoor) who died on Tuesday 14th July.  I had known George and his late wife Cynthia for many years.  George was a gentleman, one of the old school, he had a great knowledge and understanding of the breed which he had owned along with his father since WW2.  A lot of his learning came from their association with the Jardine family and the Waterbeck Dandies.  One of George's most famous dogs was Ch Gladsmuir Gay Godess, whelped in 1952 bred by FL LT and Mrs Peter Townshend she won three CC's from 1954 to 1956.  George's other great love was Basset Hounds though I will leave that part of his life to others more qualified than me to comment on.

George was quite a figure in his hometown of Wigton, Cumbria where the family business was a shoe shop, the oldest family run shop in the town.  The shop was first owned by George's father, then went on to George and Cynthia and on retirement passed on to their son, also called George.

He awarded CC's in Dandies and many of the Hound breeds including the Group, one of his proudest moments was to judge the Hound Group at Crufts in 2004 when the Whippet Ch Cobyco Call The Tune won BIS.  He judged the breed at SKC this year and was due to judge the DDTC Ch show in 2010, an appointment he considered a great honour and was looking forward to greatly.  He was a honorary member of the DDTC.

God bless George, it was a pleasure to have known you.

Beverly Deacon.

SDDTC Fun Day & Judges' Training Day cancelled
Monday, 13 July 2009 20:51

The Southern Dandie Dinmont Terrier Club's Fun Day and judges' training day has unfortunately had to be postponed, partly due to an air show being held in the next village.  The event was supposed to be held on Sunday 19th July.  The Club hope to run the event later in the year - possibly combined with a Christmas party.  See you all at the air show!

The Club are sad to announce the death of Jim McKenzie.

Jim had been a long standing member of our Club.  He had often been the Club's show manager, and later became an honorary member.  He held the affix Avonview.  He will be sadly missed.
